New Model for Solar Panels

Since 1 November 2021, the partial compensation system for photovoltaic installations under 5 kWc in Brussels has been replaced by the injection tariff. Now, electricity producers no longer receive direct compensation for energy injected into the grid. Instead, the injected electricity is remunerated proportionally to the number of kWh produced, while all energy drawn from the grid is charged at the standard prevailing tariff. This change encourages property owners to rethink their energy usage and optimise the self-consumption of their solar production.

Municipal Grants for Photovoltaic Panels

In Brussels, there is no specific regional scheme for financing the installation of solar panels. However, certain municipalities have introduced local grants to promote the use of renewable energy.
To find out if your municipality offers this type of support, contact the department responsible for urban planning or the environment.
These subsidies, typically calculated based on household income, cover a portion of the purchase and installation costs of solar panels, with a cap often set at 30%.

Renolution Grants

RENOLUTION grants aim to support renovations that improve the energy efficiency of homes in the Brussels-Capital region. Funding is available for a wide range of works, including insulation and eco-friendly heating systems. The grant amount varies based on income, with increased support for low-income households. This programme encourages comprehensive renovation and is cumulative with other local grants, facilitating the energy transition for many Brussels households.

Brussels Green Loan (Ecoreno)

The Brussels Green Loan (Ecoreno) supports energy efficiency improvements in Brussels homes, including the installation of photovoltaic panels. Two options are available: a consumer credit with rates between 0% and 1% over 10 years or a mortgage credit with rates between 0% and 2% over 30 years. The maximum loan amount is €25,000 and can be combined with other grants and local subsidies. This loan makes it easier to invest in ecological projects while reducing long-term costs.

Green Certificates

Brussels-Capital is the only region in Belgium that issues green certificates for new renewable energy installations. Valid for 10 years, these certificates can be sold to electricity providers, generating additional income for green energy producers, including those who install photovoltaic panels. As of 2024, you can receive up to 1.9 green certificates per MWh produced, depending on the size of your installation. This system supports the energy transition while offering a source of financing.

Brussels: When Can I Apply for RENOLUTION Grants?

Applications for RENOLUTION Grants must be submitted within 12 months of receiving the final invoice for the works. If you used multiple companies for your renovations, each application can be submitted separately based on the invoice date of each contractor. However, it’s important to note that a grant can only be requested once for the same works and only once every 10 years.

Flanders: How Do I Apply for the Renovation Loan "Mijn VerbouwLening"?

To obtain the renovation loan in Flanders, start by contacting an "Energiehuis" centre in your municipality. The Flemish Energy Agency will then decide whether to approve your application. Ensure that: Your house was connected to the network before 1 January 2014, the building permit is more than 5 years old, the property meets the criteria of the EPC certificate.

Wallonia: Are Photovoltaic Grants Still Available in 2025?

If you’re considering installing solar panels this year, it’s important to know that photovoltaic grants previously available in Wallonia are no longer offered.

Until 31 December 2023, certain incentives were in place in the region. These were intended to encourage Walloon residents to invest in a more ecological lifestyle through renewable energy. For example, the Prosumer tariff or the reversed metering system were available before this date.
